Different marketing strategies for makeup companies

Each makeup company has a different strategy for marketing their products. Some extensively advertise in print, others on TV, others use the radio, some resort to billboards. One method which is popular especially by new businesses or those that are small businesses is offering of free makeup samples.

Offering of free makeup samples do not always work. The reason is that due to the samples which are given away free the new business which has just started is put under additional strain and pressure as the outflow is more than the revenue generated.

This also attracts a lot of people but it could be just people wanting to know how to get free makeup and filling in their goodie bags rather than genuine buyers. There are also people who just wait around rather than buying, hoping that soon again another promotion will be offered in terms of free makeup samples. This normally happens when companies standardize the frequency of free promotions and the customers are aware of the frequency of these promotions.

On the other hand though, there are a number of people who when given the sample and if they like it, they may even switch from their regular brand of makeup and become brand ambassadors for this new product.

Companies and businesses rather than giving off free samples employ a slightly different version of the same strategy. They offer 50% off or a buy 1 get 1 free offer when the customer comes armed with a coupon or if they share the advertisement on a social networking site or refer the product to x number of their friends and acquaintances, they are entitled to either a free makeup sample or else are entitled to x% off on their purchase.

Whatever strategy the company or business decides upon when it comes to free samples, they need to ensure that the sample is remembered by the recipient. This could be in terms of the branding which is there, the prominent display of the name of the company as well as the contact information present.

As with all strategies, there is no fool proof method or a sure shot guarantee it will work. One needs to evaluate various aspects – will the business be able to take the additional financial load of offering of these free makeup samples, are the people these samples being offered to - the correct target audience which the business is aiming for. What is the number of free samples the business can afford to give, what is the method which will be employed in giving out these samples, what is the size of the sample that will be given and probably one of the most important is when will it be given. If free makeup samples are given before festive seasons or marriage seasons then the chances of it reaping a rich harvest is almost certain. However, if it is given in the lean season, by the time the marriage season or festivals come – most will have forgotten about this company.
